Some common types of gyn cancer include:

  • Cervical Cancer – begins in the cervix, which is the lower end of the uterus or womb, and screenings can help detect this cancer early
  • Ovarian Cancer – begins in the ovaries, on each side of the uterus, and is difficult to detect because symptoms often go unnoticed until the disease has progressed
  • Uterine (Endometrial) Cancer – most common in postmenopausal women, this cancer begins in the uterus, the organ where a baby grows when a woman is pregnant
  • Vaginal Cancer – a rare cancer that begins in the vaginal lining, the tube-like channel in between the bottom of the uterus and the outside of the body
  • Vulvar Cancer – begins in the outer part of the female genitalia and may cause itching, pain, or changes in skin color

When Should You See an Oncologist?

When it comes to gyn cancer, it may feel overwhelming. Depending on the cancer, there are different symptoms, diagnostic tests, treatment options or plans to help you move forward. Often, if you are having regular checkups with your provider or gynecologist, you may be able to catch early cancer signs and discuss your concerns. Your doctor at South Carolina Oncology Associates can also perform PAP smears or other screening tests to look for early-warning cancer signs.

As you go for routine visits, be sure to discuss any changes in your gynecologic health.

Early warning signs of cancer may include:

  • Changes in vaginal bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Itching or burning sensations
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge

Symptoms vary greatly, so be sure to continue your regular visits. You may be more at risk for gyn cancer if you have a family history or certain lifestyle factors like age, smoking, or obesity. You may also be at risk for a gyn cancer if you have HPV, a common sexually transmitted infection.

If you suspect you have cancer, your provider will help you seek out an oncologist. A gynecologic oncologist is a doctor who has been trained to treat cancers of a woman’s reproductive system. Your doctor will work with you to create a treatment plan customized to fit your needs.

Treatment Options for Gyn Cancer

Cancer treatment will vary greatly, depending on your particular situation and type of cancer. Gynecologic cancers are often treatable.

A few treatment options for gyn cancer may include:

  • Surgery: To remove cancerous tumors or affected organs, often the uterus is removed (hysterectomy)
  • Radiation Therapy: Targeted radiation to kill cancer cells using high-energy rays
  • Chemotherapy: Medications to destroy cancer cells through pills or medicines given in your veins
  • Targeted Therapy: Drugs that target specific cancer-related molecules
  • Immunotherapy: Boosting the immune system to fight cancer

Often, your doctor at SCOA may recommend a combination of treatments in order to target your specific cancer. When it comes to treating cancer, it may take a clear plan of action and some patience. We know it can be difficult to be diagnosed with a gyn cancer, but many have found treatment helpful and are able to eliminate the symptoms and signs of cancer.

How Can a Gyn Oncologist Treat these types of Cancer?

Compared to other types of cancer (like breast or colon cancer), gynecologic cancers are uncommon, occurring in about 100,000 women in the United States each year. That is why you need an oncologist on your side.

Your cancer care team will work with you through your journey. We realize this is a very personal experience, and you may feel overwhelmed.
